“The tankers and cargo ships of 1950 aren’t the tankers and cargo ships of today,” said James Salmon, a spokesman for the Delaware River and Bay Authority. “It’s going to do a number on them,” he said of a modern ship and the hazard it poses to a bridge like the one in Baltimore. Image The new bridge ship collision protection system project on the Delaware Memorial Bridge will install eight stone-filled “dolphin” cylinders, each measuring 80 feet in diameter. Credit... Delaware River and Bay AuthorityThe situation with the Key Bridge is “unique,” said Jim Tymon, executive director of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, which represents state transportation departments. A protection system was subsequently built around the new pier.

When Nikki Haley was a South Carolina legislator, she backed budgets boosted by federal aid. Now, Haley is running against Trump for the 2024 Republican nomination saying he is an agent of chaos. The daughter of Indian immigrants, she defeated a 30-year legislative veteran in the Republican primary. As governor, Haley had disputes with fellow Republicans that often seemed personal. But she reminds Republican primary voters that the deals were always for non-union shops.

"Zombie offices" have proliferated in the US as employees opt for fully remote or hybrid work. But he had no idea that "hybrid work" would become ubiquitous nearly 10 years later and make InnerSpace a helpful tool for understanding new trends in shared workspaces. Zombie offices have popped up around the country because there aren't offices filled with people five days a week anymore. Zombie offices and the shift to hybrid work have pushed companies to figure out the next best move to maximize office space using real-time data, not guesswork. Something like Gresham’s Law is at work in the carbon offset market, which was set up to fight climate change. Bad carbon credits are driving out good carbon credits. The Barclays report focused on the voluntary carbon market. That’s the one that companies such as Microsoft and Salesforce are using to help reach their goals of net-zero carbon emissions. The voluntary carbon market can be a valuable mechanism for directing investment to developing nations that need help in the fight against climate change.

Eduardo Munoz/ReutersTreks at the airport have been getting worse ever since security changes were implemented after the September 11, 2001, attacks. In Newark, Chicago and other cities’ airport terminals, moving walkways have been removed to make room for more shops and restaurants. Some new airport terminals have recently opened without moving walkways. The airport is now building a tunnel to shorten the walk from security to the concourse. So, are people missing flights now because they have to walk so far?

Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, were informed of the Civil War’s end and their newfound freedom. The Eight Seconds Juneteenth Rodeo organizers thought a lot about those questions. Jones-Dixon wants Black Portlanders to see a version of themselves in a rodeo that is fun but that also makes them proud. Frederick says there remains a notion among Black Portlanders that the flooding was a convenient excuse for displacing the city’s thriving Black enclave. Having the rodeo near Vanport is a way of saying that this is an event for you, for us.

Ivan McClellan, a photographer, was captivated the first time he came across Black cowboy culture at a rodeo in Oklahoma years ago. He saw Black people donning cowboy hats and saddling horses, images that inspired him to fully document that community in his work. This year, though, he wanted to go a step further. Mr. McClellan and Vince Jones-Dixon, a city councilor in Gresham, Ore., sought to host a Juneteenth rodeo in Portland, one that would bring together the Black cowboy and cowgirl communities across the Pacific Northwest.

Biden’s Selma visit puts spotlight back on voting rights

The visit to Selma also is an opportunity for Biden to speak directly to the current generation of civil rights activists. They urged Washington politicians visiting Selma not to sully the memories of the late civil rights activists John Lewis, Hosea Williams and others with empty platitudes. "When voting rights passed after Selma, it didn't just help Black people. We need the president to reframe this: When you block voting rights, you're not just hurting Black people. As a candidate in 2020, Biden promised to pursue sweeping legislation to bolster protection of voting rights.

A man accused of chewing off the ear of a 78-year-old man on a light-rail train platform near Portland, Oregon, told detectives he thought the victim was a robot trying to kill him, police said. Koryn Daniel Kraemer was charged with second-degree assault in Multnomah County District Court on Wednesday, the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office said. Officers used force to remove Kraemer from the victim and the victim was taken to a hospital, the affidavit said.
